Home blood pressure monitoring allows better cardiovascular health by allowing you to keep track of your heart health without frequent visits to the hospital. Monitoring over time helps identify changes early and take prompt action if necessary. Home measurements are more accurate due to increased relaxation, avoiding stress-induced elevated readings and it allows for better communication with doctors and proactive self-care.

How to Measure Blood Pressure at Home with an Automated Cuff

  • Sit comfortably with your arm resting on a flat surface, palm facing up.
  • Place the cuff on your upper arm at heart level and secure it comfortably.
  • Start the automated blood pressure monitor and stay still during the reading.
  • Once complete, the monitor displays your blood pressure and pulse on the digital panel.

How to Measure Blood Pressure Manually with a Cuff and Squeezable Balloon

  • Sit comfortably with your arm supported at heart level, palm facing up.
  • Place the stethoscope in your ears and position the chest piece on the inside of your elbow where the brachial artery is located.
  • Inflate the cuff using the squeezable balloon until you can’t hear any sound through the stethoscope.
  • Slowly release the pressure by loosening the valve on the squeezable balloon while listening for the first sound (systolic pressure) and the last sound (diastolic pressure).
Do write down the readings, date, and time for future reference. Blood pressure readings indicate the force of blood against artery walls. Systolic pressure (higher number) is when your heart contracts, while diastolic pressure (lower number) is when your heart relaxes. While the normal range is around 120/80 mmHg, higher readings signal hypertension or prehypertension, needing attention and lifestyle changes to lower risks. Monitor your readings regularly with the help of an automated or manual cuff and strive for a healthy range, and lead a happier life.
