Stenting Vs By-Pass Surgery

Before you do that, understand the basics of both the procedures – stenting and bypass surgery.

The two main approaches of treating coronary arteries are:

Angioplasty with stenting

In this procedure, a small balloon is wrapped around a collapsed wire mesh stent. This stent along with the wrapped balloon is then inserted into your blood vessel through the arm or groin and guided to the heart by the X-ray images. Once it reaches the blocked coronary artery, the balloon is inflated to compress the cholesterol-filled infection that restricts the blood flow through the artery. The balloon is then deflated and taken out, leaving behind the stent in the same position to keep the artery open.

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)

CABG is an open-heart surgery in which your cardiac surgeon will reach the blocked artery in your heart by making an incision in the chest. The surgeon will directly repair the diseases part or parts of the artery and close the incision after suturing the ends. Alternatively, a vein or artery might be taken from another part of your body and stitched in place to help the blood flow reroute near the blocked coronary artery.

Deciding between Stents and Bypass surgery

Many factors come into consideration while deciding which treatment process could be more effective and safe for you. When you are diagnosed with CAD (Coronary artery disease), you will be referred to a cardiologist or heart surgeon who will then consider the following factors before suggesting a treatment option:

Number of damaged vessels

The severity of your condition

Existing or previous illnesses

Whether you have already given conservative medical management a shot

Your doctor will suggest stenting as a minimally invasive treatment and in cases of emergencies. However, this process is not suitable to treat all kinds of CADs. If he has recommended bypass surgery, it is a more invasive process that is used for severe CAD cases and offers complete revascularization.
